Crane Steel Wire Rope Inspection Training

This one-day LEEA-accredited course is intended for those tasked with inspecting crane steel wire ropes. Delivered by experienced LEEA-accredited trainers and supported by real-world insight from our active inspection engineers, it provides in-depth theoretical knowledge. Course participants will learn how to assess rope condition, recognise visible signs of wear or damage, understand different modes of deterioration, and apply appropriate discard criteria in line with ISO 4309 and relevant legal and safety requirements. The course helps ensure that inspections are carried out competently, consistently, and in full compliance.


Course Information

    • Align with ISO 4309: Ensure inspections of steel wire ropes meet the internationally recognised standards of ISO 4309. This standard provides detailed criteria for assessing rope condition, identifying defects, and determining appropriate discard procedures to maintain safety and legal compliance.

    • Ensure LOLER Compliance: Meet the requirements of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) by ensuring all lifting operations are carried out safely and that equipment is fit for use.

    • Demonstrate Competence: Acquire the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to support competency in conducting thorough examinations and pre-use inspections, in accordance with legal requirements.

    • Promote a Safer Workplace: Support your legal duty as an employer by implementing safe systems of work and ensuring that personnel involved with lifting equipment are properly trained and qualified.

    • LEEA Accredited Certification: Completing LEEA Accredited training demonstrates your company's dedication to safety, quality, and professionalism in the lifting industry.

    • Conduct Pre-Use Inspections: Perform effective pre-use inspections to identify obvious defects or issues before operation.

    • Carry Out Thorough Examinations: Conduct thorough examinations on steel wire rope in line with current standards and best practices.

    • Inspection Tooling: Understand the different types of tooling required to conduct examinations and their proper use.

    • Inspection and Testing Methods: Understand the inspection and testing techniques available to form your decisions.

    • Identify and Report Defects: Recognise common defects in steel wire rope and follow correct reporting procedures.

    • Individual Discard and Combined Effect: Understand how to assess the individual discard criteria and how to combine it for an overall assessment.

    • Complete Documentation: Accurately complete reports of thorough examination and any required supporting documentation.

  • Rope Types Covered

    • This training includes all rope types commonly used on cranes.

    Inspection Criteria Covered

    • Covers inspection and discard criteria for crane wire ropes, along with best practices for preventative care and maintenance.

    Course Timing: 9am - 4pm (End times can vary depending on course participant numbers and experience)

    Arrival Time: Course participants should arrive at 8.45am prompt.

  • Please ensure you wear safety boots when attending this training course.

    For those attending training at the Certex Training Academy, all other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided. However, you are welcome to bring your own PPE if you prefer.

    If the training is being conducted at your company's site, please consult your employer regarding the specific PPE requirements in accordance with your company's site safety policy.

    Each participant is required to produce photographic ID on the first day of the course. Failure to do so will result in the participant being unable to participate.

    Please attend this training course wearing safety boots.

    All other PPE will be provided however you are welcome to bring your own if preferred.
