Appointed Person for Lifting Operations Training

This comprehensive five-day LEEA-accredited course is designed for individuals who plan and oversee lifting operations in line with LOLER and BS7121. Aimed at those assuming the role of Appointed Person, the course combines in-depth theoretical instruction with practical planning exercises. Delivered by experienced LEEA-accredited trainers, delegates will gain the competence and confidence to take full responsibility for lifting operations on site. Key topics include lift planning, risk assessment, method statements, selection of lifting equipment, coordination of personnel, and the implementation of effective control measures to ensure safe, compliant operations.

Course Information

    • Ensure LOLER Compliance: Meet the requirements of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) by ensuring all lifting operations are carried out safely and that equipment is fit for use.

    • Demonstrate Competency: Gain the knowledge and practical skills required to be deemed competent in planning, managing, and overseeing lifting operations as an Appointed Person, in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements.

    • Crane Identification and Operations: Recognise various types of mobile cranes and understand their applications in different lifting scenarios.

    • Ground Bearing Pressure: Calculate ground bearing pressures and determine suitable outrigger mat sizes based on imposed loads.

    • Risk Assessment & Method Statements (RAMS): Identify potential risks and apply appropriate mitigation strategies through well-structured RAMS.

    • Crane Duty Charts: Interpret crane duty charts to ensure lifts are within safe operational limits.

    • Hand Signals – Review standard hand signals used to communicate during lifting operations.

    • Sling Configuration – Learn various safe sling techniques for different lifting scenarios.

    • Load and Centre of Gravity Calculations: Learn how to accurately estimate load weights and calculate the centre of gravity to ensure safe and balanced lifting operations.

    • Load Considerations – Understand special considerations when lifting different loads, including the lifting of persons.

    • Lift Planning: Develop comprehensive lift plans, including method statements, risk assessments, and key operational details.

  • Course Content:

  • Each participant must pass a theory assessment to demonstrate a solid understanding of the course content.

    They must also demonstrate the ability to accurately develop a comprehensive Lift Plan and use it to safely coordinate and execute a live lifting operation.

  • This course is not intended for beginners in lifting operations. It is strongly recommended that participants have prior experience or qualifications in one of the following roles: Slinger/Banksman, Crane Operator, or Lift Supervisor.

  • Total Training Hours: 35

    Total Days: 5

    Timing: 9am - 4pm (End times can vary depending on delegate number and experience)

    Arrival time: Course participants should arrive at 8.45am prompt.

  • Please ensure you wear safety boots when attending this training course.

    For those attending training at the Certex Training Academy, all other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided. However, you are welcome to bring your own PPE if you prefer.

    If the training is being conducted at your company's site, please consult your employer regarding the specific PPE requirements in accordance with your company's site safety policy.

    Each participant is required to produce photographic ID on the first day of the course. Failure to do so will result in the participant being unable to participate.

    All other PPE will be provided however you are welcome to bring your own if preferred.
